Cheshire Success for Girls

It is only 6 years ago that Upton CC selected its first all girls team, an u9b side away at Neston. However in those six years a lot has happened……

Firstly the number of girl members has steadily increased over that time, (24 down last Friday), and although we don’t have a girl’s only side, it’s a testament to all the girls that they represented the Club at every junior level last year up to u15s.

Ellen McGowan and Jess Penny have both taken part in the end of season 6-a-side tournaments, and it won’t be long before we see a girl playing senior cricket.

We have strengthened our ties with Cheshire and in 2015 were one of 4 clubs chosen to help promote girl’s cricket with local schools which saw a large number of girls getting their first taste of cricket at UCC.

And we are hopeful that we will be able to arrange a couple of girl’s only fixtures in 2016.

But it’s not just within the Club that the girls are succeeding:
Upton Hall School are 2016 Lady Taverner’s Indoor Cheshire County Cricket Champions, the team is captained by Ellen McGowan, with Upton CC members Hannah McGowan, Lily Scudder, Charlie Scudder, Kate Renshaw, and Emma Rowlands all in the squad.

The team are at Old Trafford on the 27th April for the regional finals against other County champions.

Good Luck Girls

This winter saw a number of girls nominated to attend Cheshire nets as part of the Cheshire Player Pathway, with six of the girls, Ellen McGowan, Jess Penny, Tessie Nickson, Hannah McGowan, Lily Scudder & Charlie Scudder all being invited to attend the Cheshire Excellence course in Nantwich from which the Cheshire representative sides are selected.

All the girls equipped themselves well and received very positive feedback from the coaches, and the good news is that three of the girls, Lily, Charlie, & Tessie have been selected to represent Cheshire U13 girls this summer.

Congratulations to all three, enjoy your cricket and do Upton CC proud.

Simon McGowan
Junior Cricket Chairman.
